Simple Cowl

P70616-123046.jpgThis is a simple neck warmer that I made from my handspun. It is very simple and pretty quick.

You will need:

  • Yarn (I used 100 grams of my  handspun Merino, Alpaca, Silk blend which was 118 meters, and around worsted aran weight/ 10 ply).
  • circular knitting needle  to match yarn, (I used a 4.5 mm, 50 cm cable)
  • Needle to sew in the ends

  1.  Cast on 120 stitches. You can cast on more or less, but it must be a number that can be divided by 6.
  2. Work in a 3 x 3 rib, (knit three, purl three, repeat) turning at the end of each row, for 2 rounds. At the end of the second round , close the loop, working into the first stitch of this round being careful not to twist the rows worked so far. You are now working in the round.
  3. Continue working in the round in a 3 x 3 rib till piece measures approx 20 cm. Turn
  4.  No Longer working in the round, slip the first stitch (if your first three stitches should be knit, then slip knit wise, if they should be purl then slip purl wise, then continue working the ribbing pattern (note, if your first three stitches are purl, then only purl two stitches as the first slip stitch counts as the first stitch, if you knit the fir three stitches are knit, then only knit 2 stitches as the first slip stitch counts as the first knit stitch).
  5. Continue working back and forward till entire piece measures 29 cm approx. Cast off loosely. I used the Elizabeth Zimmerman’s sewn bind-off to get a nice stretchy edge.
